Will it be possible to restore the liver and suppress or not suppress the immune system?
Researchers from the University of California conducted a series of experiments in order to develop an effective method of liver repair.
Liver fibrosis can be considered one of the most dangerous diseases today. During this disease, the connective fibrous tissue grows strongly, scarring of tissues occurs, and at the same time the work of this vital organ is disrupted. Experts conducted a number of experiments and were able to prove that in order to stop the scarring process of the liver, it is enough to block the protective protein produced by the body.
The new technique can be used not only for fibrosis, but also for other diseases accompanied by scarring of tissues. These include pneumosclerosis, burns, scleroderma, cirrhosis of the liver, as well as viral hepatitis.
The technique developed by American researchers will not only stop the scarring process, but also allow the body to start the natural processes of liver cell repair.
To suppress or not to suppress the immune system?
It would seem that the question is idle. However, not for patients who have undergone organ transplant surgery.
After such complex operations, almost all patients undergo a course of treatment based on suppression of the patient's immune system in order to prevent rejection of the donor organ.
However, scientists from different countries have been conducting a general study for seven years, the purpose of which was to find out how necessary this treatment is for all patients. It has been proven that there is a certain category of patients who do not need to suppress the immune system. In hospitals in Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Canada and many other countries, patients were identified who did not undergo a course of immunosuppressants for various reasons (most often due to side effects of drugs or serious illnesses against which such treatment was contraindicated). In seven years, 36 patients were identified who did not undergo such a course and at the same time retained donor organs. The analyses showed that patients with an active group of genes that regulate the production and activity of B-lymphocytes do not need to reduce the body's immune defenses. The body itself copes with all the negative consequences of transplantation and does not reject the donor organ.
After the completion of the main study, control experiments were conducted, which showed the effectiveness of this method of isolating patients who do not need immune blocking.
